What is EDB File?

EDB is an acronym for Exchange Database. In general EDB files are exchange database files that primarily stores up process and non-SMTP messages. These files are formatted using the b-tree structure. Moreover, every single EDB file has a corresponding STM file that features the actual SMTP messages. A file that features the .edb file extension is used by mailbox data files that have been saved by the Microsoft Exchange Server. It generally acts as a pointer to Outlook profiles synchronized with Exchange server as user mailboxes.

What cause EDB File Corruption?

EDB files store the emails of the email clients such as MS Outlook. Given the importance of these emails, experts always recommend to maintain a regular back up of all your important files, as situation arise that result in the corruption of EDB file. However, here are different factors that can cause the damage or the corruption of EDB files.

Improper System Shutdown – In general, it has been observed that many of us do not pay too much importance to the good method of shutting down your system. It is essential to follow a proper process for system shutdown as the edb file often gets damaged easily.

Hard Drive Failure – Failure of the hard drive or crash of hard drive also leaves you with corrupt or damaged EDB file.

Virus Attack – Virus always create chaos with all your important data featured in the EDB file. They are malicious software that hinders your working. So, it gets essential for you to frequently update the antivirus and carry out the scan of your system’s drives.

Exchange Dirty Shutdown - Exchange Dirty Shutdown is yet another major issue that results in the damage of EDB file. This could be attributed to power failure, software or hardware malfunction, unexpected shutdown, etc

How to deal with EDB File Error

Now as a database administrator, you can very effectively fix EDB error and restore inaccessible mailbox data by making right usage of Eseutil and Isinteg tools. Both Eseutil and Isinteg tools are stored in the Bin folder of the Exchange Server system. However, initially you require doing the following steps to run Eseutil.exe from command prompt

  • Click on Start>Run
  • In the run box, type “cmd” and press “ok”
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin directory
  • Type Eseutil.exe in command line

Now to start recovering corrupt EDB database, use following Eseutil commands

Eseutil/P Primary name.EDB

If EDB files are severely damaged, then you should use Eseutil/p command. The command line to repair severely damaged private or public EDB file is:

Eseutil /p C:\Program files\Exchsvr\mdbdata\ primary name.EDB

primary name.EDB

After you have successfully repaired the EDB database with Eseutil /P command, run Eseutil /d command to defragment the repaired EDB file. Eseutil/d, usually helps in trimming the size of a repaired EDB folder by removing invalid and blank database pages.

Now once you have used Eseutil commands, you would require running Isinteg command on the Exchange Server. The command line will appear like this

Isinteg-s (Server name) - fix- test all tests

Kindly understand that you got to run Isinteg command frequently till MS Exchange Server does not show zero error.

Isinteg Command

Run the Eseutil \G command to test out the integrity of the repaired EDB database. Finally, remount the repaired EDB database using Administrative tools of the Exchange Server.

Being a user of the Exchange Server if you use MS Outlook or Outlook Express client, then the probability is very less that the Exchange Information Store will contain Streaming media or STM file along with EDB and Transaction Log files. Apart from this, you also need to understand that usage of Eseutil command has got its own limitations

ESEUTIL /r command can help you deal with the dirty shutdown state only. But if database is highly corrupt, it doesn't works.

ESEUTIL /p script is not recommended to use as it does not helps in repairing EDB file. In fact, it just deletes the corrupted segments from EDB file. Simultaneously, it results in a major data loss.

Thus, manual recovery of Exchange databases is time consuming and often involves loss of data. It is therefore advisable to make proper usage of an automatic exchange database repair tool to fix EDB file errors.

By using proficient EDB recovery software you can easily restore mailboxes from inaccessible or corrupt exchange database to .PST files. Being integrated with many advance features, the edb pst software swiftly converts the EDB (private and public folders) files to easily accessible PST files that can be imported within MS Outlook. The software recovers emails, contacts, distribution lists, calendars, meetings, events, journal, task draft, and notes. The good aspect such edb pst conversion utility is its ability of retaining the folder hierarchy intact in exported PST files. Once the recovery procedure gets over, it displays the recovered items in Red color and in turn enables user in identifying the deleted items.

Standard Features of EDB File Recovery Software

  • Retains the original folder information and structure while converting .EDB file
  • Allows the conversion from EDB file to PST with deleted items from EDB database folders
  • Facilitates advance filter option to export specific items or even filter duplicate items
  • Permits exportation of a single mailbox or bulk mailboxes to MS Outlook (.PST) files
  • Saves Mailboxes/Folders/Items to PST, MSG, EML, HTML, TXT and RTF files
